Coping saw and hand drill require adult supervision. Always cut away from the body. Clamp workpieces to the table — never hold with hands while cutting.
What You’ll Build
A freestanding marble run with ramps, tunnels, and drops. The best part: it never works perfectly on the first try, so your kid learns to test, adjust, and redesign.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Design the Path
Sketch the marble’s path on paper first. Mark where ramps go, where marbles drop, and where they exit. Think about height — you need enough for gravity to do its job.
Step 2: Cut the Ramps
Use the coping saw to cut wood strips into ramp pieces. Angle the ends slightly so marbles roll smoothly from one ramp to the next.
Step 3: Build the Frame
Cut vertical supports from dowels or strips. Glue and clamp them to a baseboard to create the structure that holds the ramps.
Step 4: Attach the Ramps
Glue ramps to the supports at alternating angles. Test with a marble after each ramp — adjust the angle before the glue sets.
Step 5: Add Tunnels and Drops
Use hollow dowels or rolled paper for tunnels. Create vertical drops by leaving gaps between ramp levels.
Step 6: Test and Iterate
Run marbles from the top. Where do they get stuck? Fall off? Adjust angles, add guide rails, widen paths. This is the real engineering.
