What You’ll Build
A bug-shaped robot that vibrates and scoots across the table when you shine a light on it. The solar panel powers a tiny motor with an offset weight that makes the whole thing shake and move.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Build the Body
Cut cardboard or foam into a bug shape — oval works great. Make it light; heavy bodies won’t vibrate enough to move.
Step 2: Wire the Circuit
Connect two wires from the solar panel to the DC motor. That’s it — it’s the simplest circuit possible. No batteries needed.
Step 3: Offset the Motor
Glue a small piece of clay or a bent paperclip to the motor shaft. When it spins, the offset weight creates vibration.
Step 4: Mount Everything
Glue the motor and solar panel to the top of the bug body. Panel faces up to catch light.
Step 5: Add Legs
Cut toothbrush heads and glue them to the underside, bristles pointing backward and slightly down. The angled bristles convert vibration into forward movement.
Step 6: Add Personality
Glue on googly eyes, pipe-cleaner antennae, and draw patterns. Take it outside into the sun and watch it go!
Make It Easier
- Use a pre-wired solar motor kit (just mount and decorate)
- Skip the toothbrush legs and let it vibrate on a smooth surface
